Traditional handicraft

Beyond all expectation, Sardinia that charms and captivates.

Sardinian craftsmanship has its roots in the millenia-old history of the island. It is a mirror of the daily life of a people dedicated primarily to sheep-herding and farming. Geographic isolation has allowed Sardinian crafts to remain an original product of a deeply-rooted, indigenous culture. Over the centuries our tradition has absorbed elements from the Phoenicians, Romans, Byzantines and Spanish, in a process of continual cultural enrichment. Wood, marshy grasses, clay, stone, wool and cork are used to manufacture domestic implements, furniture, cloth and tools that are then decorated with simple geometrical and naturalistic motifs and still to this day colored with vegetable pigments.
The process of planning and the application of the techniques and manipulation of the materials that craftsmanship entails exhibit influences that go beyond the simple purpose of the craft. They develop into the world of ideas: the simple tool becomes a representation of ideas and art object as well.
The protagonists of this process are men and women, members of two rigidly distinct roles and fields of specialty. For centuries women have been responsible for producing household containers and kitchen utensils, bread-making and weaving. The complex of domestic crafts has evolved from a practical phenomenon to a collection of remarkable artistic worth.

Aside from the production of practical, everyday demands, the artists and artisans of Sardinia are also masters in working in precious metals: silver and gold are molded into sacred objects and ornaments for the traditional dress of the various parts of the island. The sobriety of their execution and their straightforward character make pieces of Sardinian craftsmanship widely cherished.
